The Sengen Shrine
As
the head shrine in Suruga Province (the old name
for Shizuoka), Sengen has attracted a large number
of devotees since the Heian Period (Middle Ages).
The shrine consists of 24 magnificently lacquered
buildings and is a part of the Japanese cultural
property. The eleventh Tokugawa Shogun, Ienari,
initiated the construction of the present shrine in
1804 and it took over 60 years to complete it.
